STATEMENT OF NEED
This activity is designed to help clinicians implement changed guidelines which recommend beta blockade less strongly
than before; achieve greater consistency and clarity of pharmaceutical and syringe labeling, in accordance with human
factors; and facilitate the collection of clinical data to improve rather than merely to document a significant dimension of
patient care.

TARGET AUDIENCE
Anesthesiologists, hospitalists, intensivists, pain management physicians; CRNAs.

support of continuing medical education.   Disclosure of the planning committee and faculty’s commercial relationships

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
  • Provide amnestic drugs.  Utilize intraoperative electrophysiology monitoring.  
  • Manage hypotension accompanying neuraxial analgesia and anesthesia; “…phenylephrine may be preferable
    because of improved fetal acid– base status in uncomplicated pregnancies.”
  • Avoid neuraxial anesthesia in patients with infectious risks. Identify neuraxial infections.  Refer surgical
    candidates for Rx of such infections.

CREDIT*
The Duke University School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 22.0 AMA PRA Category 1
Credits.   Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.  Approved
by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists for 22 CE Credits; Code Number 33931, Expiration Date January 28,
2012.

* General Session (20.0 credits), Optional “Sail with the Professors” Case Discussion (2.0 credits) for a maximum total of   
22.0 credits.
