STATEMENT OF NEED This activity is designed to help clinicians implement changed guidelines which recommend beta blockade less strongly than before; achieve greater consistency and clarity of pharmaceutical and syringe labeling, in accordance with human factors; and facilitate the collection of clinical data to improve rather than merely to document a significant dimension of patient care.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
Provide amnestic drugs. Utilize intraoperative electrophysiology monitoring.
Manage hypotension accompanying neuraxial analgesia and anesthesia; “…phenylephrine may be preferable because of improved fetal acid– base status in uncomplicated pregnancies.”
Avoid neuraxial anesthesia in patients with infectious risks. Identify neuraxial infections. Refer surgical candidates for Rx of such infections.
CREDIT* The Duke University School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 22.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
